King Charles Emmanuel III gives order in
1734 to recruit protestant Vadois of the Valley of Luserna,
S. Martin and Perrero. The new unit is organized in 10
companies and is raised in pignerol and it is called
Battalion de La Reine. In 1741 La Reine becomes Regiment La
Reine with two battalions of 10 companies each. During the
Austrian Succession War in 1746 the second battalion is
disbanded.
Service during the Polish
Succession War
La Reine is raised at the beginning of
this war. It has probably only garrison duties.
Service during the Austrian
Succession War
At the outbreak of this war La Reine is
campaigning in north-east Italy in the Po plains, and it is
present in march in the cities of Cortemaggiore. In
September La Reine's 1st battalion marches on the Alps; from
the camp at La Thuile, near Petit S. Bernard gap in Aosta
Valley the Regiment takes action in Savoy during the
counter-offensive against an invading Spanish army. In
jenuary 1743 La Reine returns again in Piedmont. After the
debacle in Savoy's theatre for La Reine is now the Varaita
Valley where the main french-spanish army is on the
offensive. In order to stop this break-in the 1st battalion
fights at the battle of Casteldelfino (8 october 1743). The
follow year the whole regiment is present at the hard combat
around the entrenched camp of Villafranca (20-21 april 1744)
in the Mediterranean front. During the defence of Collet du
Villefrenche the Regiment is surrounded with othes units and
is compelled to surrend with two batteries of cannons.
During the summer the struggle is again in the Alps ridge.
The french-spanish's offensive break the defensive line. The
whole Regiment is at the battle Madonna dell'Olmo (30
september 1744), situated on the centre, second line. The
fight is not particullary lucky. The regiment loses one of
its flags. In 1745 La Regine defends the south west sector
of Piedmont supported by the Placesfortes. In the follow
years La Regine has garrison duties and is transferred in
the mediterranean theatre.
