"Chanson de l'Assiette"

Jean Cerino Badone

Notice historique

The Battle of Col de l'Assiette (19 july 1747) was the major clash of armies during the Austrain Succession War on the Alp theatre. This was one of the few clear battle to be cleary winned by the piedmontese army. This action became a sort of legend inside the Kingdom of Sardinia and, then, of the new Kingdom of Italy in XIX century. Assietta was also the name of an italian Division in WWII.

Probably songs and legends born immediately the night after of the battle. This famous song was published for the first time by V. E. Dabormida in 1891 after a walk on the battlefield. It was singing by a mountaineer when the historian arrived on the Assietta Ridge. After a little research he could appreciate that this ballad was quite popular near the frontier with France, in Chisone and Susa Valleys.

In a second time it was attribuited to the Waldesian poet and writer David Michelin.
